There is more to health literacy than simply understanding written information.

What do we offer?

We have recognised that low health literacy is an issue for health consumers. There is much more to health literacy than having a group of consumers review information in your brochures or on your website. Health literate services can only exist with the right systems and structures in place.

Health Issues Centre offers a three-hour workshop that will teach health service staff how to assess the materials from their service. This will help them develop and share more easily understood information with their patients and clients.

This workshop will cover:

  • Definition and types of health literacy

  • The effects of low health literacy in the community

  • The attributes of a health literate organisations

  • The collaborative approach to improving health literacy in the community

  • The role of consumer representatives in enhancing the health literacy of their communities.

What participants say

It was great learning about the ’10 Attributes of a Health Literate Organisation’. It has given me ideas of how we can improve health literacy – and has made me think about things like our mission statement and policies. Now I can look at how we support our clinical staff, and how we can enhance their communication skills and provide training on ‘teach back’ techniques.
