Covid-19 Community Forum: Final Report

2020-04-28T09:21:33+10:00

Who Makes the call? Download full report here: Who Makes the Call - COVID-19 Forum Report Executive Summary  The grim reality of rationing intensive care resources as a result of COVID-19 has recently been witnessed or predicted in several countries (e.g. Italy, USA). Whilst social distancing measures introduced within Australia to ensure our health system is not overwhelmed have thus far been successful, there is considerable (and understandable) anxiety among those with complex conditions and vulnerabilities that they may be denied intensive care should the situation escalate. If that occurs, multiple patients will be subject to triage and clinicians will be in the invidious position of having to make difficult life and death choices. If these choices are not guided by social as well as clinical [...]

Life in isolation

2020-04-28T09:21:18+10:00

It's not all beer and jigsaw puzzles Listening to politicians talk about Australia’s pandemic lockdown you could be forgiven for thinking that a nuclear family with two kids and a dog is representative of a “typical” Aussie household. Much of the media coverage and political commentary has focused on exercising with family members, activities to keep the kids entertained and spending time together as a family unit. But what about the approximately 5% of people who live in a share-house with friends or strangers and are separated from their loved ones? Or the whopping one quarter of Australians who live alone? [...]

Covid-19 and ethical triage – a consumer forum

2020-08-27T16:52:07+10:00

Covid-19 and ethical triage – a consumer forum At some point in the near future – possibility within days – Australia will run out of ICU beds for patients critically ill with Covid-19. When that moment comes, our medical professionals will be forced to make unenviable decisions about who will receive intensive care treatment and who will miss out. Some states have begun developing a framework to decide how patients will be triaged but Health Issues Centre is concerned that clinical guidelines focus strongly on survivability. This means the most vulnerable groups are at greatest risk of being unable to access [...]
